About this place

Pop on a hard hat and head underground! Big Pit National Coal Museum in Blaenavon is a real coal mine, and it's one of the most memorable days out in Wales. The highlight is the underground tour, where former miners take you down the shaft to see what life was really like at the coalface. Their stories are fascinating, funny and moving all at once. Back above ground, you can explore the colliery buildings and exhibitions to learn more about the mining communities of South Wales. There are family activities and seasonal events through the year, from Mine Monsters to Santa Underground, so check what's on before you go. Good to know: entry to the museum is free. Underground tours have a small charge and aren't guaranteed on arrival, so you can book a timed ticket in advance if you want a set slot. We couldn't find what access needs are available, so please let us know if we have missed any.
