About this place

Castell Coch, the "Red Castle", looks like it's popped straight out of a fairytale! Rising from the beech woods of Fforest Fawr just north of Cardiff, its round towers and pointy roofs are a sight to behold. The castle was designed in the 1800s by architect William Burges for the Marquess of Bute, and inside the rooms are wonderfully over the top, with dazzling colours, gold and detailed decoration everywhere you look. Beneath it all are the remains of a real 13th-century castle. An exhibition and audio guide fill you in on the story. Pair your visit with a walk in the surrounding woods, where the Fforest Fawr Sculpture Trail is right on the doorstep. Good to know: entry is paid (free for Cadw members). The car park is free. Only assistance dogs are allowed. The café is closed until further notice, and conservation work may affect some areas. There are steep, narrow spiral stairs in the towers.
