Chepstow Castle
Bridge Street, Chepstow, NP16 5EY
About this place
Perched on a clifftop above the River Wye, Chepstow Castle is one of the oldest stone castles in Britain, and it's a properly dramatic place to explore. Building started in 1067, just after the Norman Conquest, and its stones tell a story spanning around 900 years. Wander through the towers and gatehouses, explore the Tudor apartments, and climb Marten's Tower for brilliant views up and down the river. Grab an audio guide from the visitor centre to bring the history to life as you go. Keep an eye out for seasonal events too, including ghost tours, pumpkin decorating and Christmas workshops. Good to know: entry is paid (free for Cadw members). There's a pay and display car park just below the entrance. Dogs on short leads are welcome on ground-floor levels. Some areas have steep, uneven steps and high wall walks. There are no toilets within the monument, however free accessible public toilets with baby changing facilities are located in the car park opposite the castle, adjacent to the Tourist Information Centre. Dogs must be kept on leads at all times and non-assistance dogs must remain on the ground floor only.
