Fforest Fawr is an ancient woodland right next to Castell Coch, and it's a magical place for a family walk with a few surprises along the way. Follow the Sculpture Trail and see how many giant wood carvings you can spot hiding among the trees. There are three heritage trails to choose from, and you can explore old mining caves left over from the area's industrial past. In early spring the woods are carpeted with bluebells, wood anemones and wild garlic, and in August look out for big orange silver-washed fritillary butterflies. There's a café just around the corner from the Castell Coch entrance for a bite to eat after your walk. Good to know: walks start from either the Castell Coch car park or the Fforest Fawr car park off Heol y Fforest. You can download a walk guide and map from the website.
