Goytre Wharf & Canal
Old Abergavenny Road, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, NP7 9EW
About this place
Goytre Wharf is a peaceful place to explore local heritage, enjoy scenic canal walks and discover the wildlife that calls the waterway home. It was where limestone was brought down from the surrounding mountains and was processed in lime kilns before being transported by boats. There’s plenty to discover at Goytre Wharf. Hire a canoe or hop aboard a boat trip to explore the beautiful Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal from the water. If you prefer to stay on dry land, enjoy a circular walk through peaceful woodland alongside the canal admiring the many barges moored up, covering around 1.7 miles (2.7 km). Take a step back in time as you explore the historic wharf and its old lime kilns, where friendly volunteers can share fascinating stories about the area's industrial past. You can also enjoy a leisurely stroll along the canal towpath to discover the historic limekilns, impressive aqueduct and charming Aqueduct (Machine) Cottage. Whether you're looking for a scenic walk, a little local history or a peaceful escape surrounded by nature, Goytre Wharf is a lovely spot to add to your next adventure. Plus you can enjoy food at the cafe or grab some chocolate/ice creams from the boat yard opposite whilst the little ones enjoy the playground.
