Newport Transporter Bridge
Brunel Street, Newport, NP20 2JG
About this place
Newport's most famous landmark is a sight to behold! The Transporter Bridge has towered over the River Usk since 1906, and it's one of only a handful of working transporter bridges left anywhere in the world. Instead of driving across, people and vehicles were carried over the river on a gondola hanging from the high beam, a brilliant bit of Victorian-era engineering that still amazes visitors today. It makes a fantastic photo stop, and spotting it from different parts of the city is half the fun. The bridge is currently undergoing a major restoration, and a brand new visitor centre is being built by Newport City Council, so it's an exciting time for this much-loved icon. The Friends of the Newport Transporter Bridge share updates, events and lots of history on their website. Good to know: the bridge and visitor centre aren't open for crossings while restoration work goes on, so check for the latest news before making a special trip.
