Newport Wetlands (RSPB)
West Nash Road, Nash, Newport, NP18 2BZ
About this place
Newport Wetlands is a brilliant day out for curious kids and nature lovers alike. This RSPB reserve sits where the River Usk meets the Severn Estuary, with reedbeds, lagoons, wet grassland and mudflats stretching out as far as the eye can see. Grab the binoculars and look out for avocets, curlews, kingfishers, bearded tits and marsh harriers. If you're lucky you might spot a water vole or even an otter. In winter, time your visit for dusk and you could catch one of the famous starling murmurations, when thousands of birds swirl across the sky together. It's unforgettable! Little ones can let off steam on the adventure play equipment and in the Discovery Zone, and the visitor centre café is perfect for a warming drink. History fans will love hearing about the 7,500-year-old human footprints found preserved nearby. Good to know: paths, floating walkways and a wheelchair-accessible hide make it easy to get around, and mobility scooters and wheelchairs are available to use. Dogs are limited to one perimeter walking route, and bikes are allowed on a set route only. There's a parking charge.
