Pen-y-fan Pond Country Park
Pen-y-fan Industrial Estate, Oakdale, NP11 4EG
About this place
Pen-y-fan Pond is a real summertime favourite for families, and it's easy to see why! Despite the name, it isn't really a pond at all. It's one of the last canal feeder reservoirs left in Wales, built in the 1790s to top up the Monmouthshire Canal. A flat, level tarmac path loops all the way around the water (about 1.3km a lap), with benches dotted along the way, making it ideal for little legs, pushchairs and a gentle stroll. There are open grassy spaces for flying a kite, kicking a ball about or spreading out a picnic, and picnic tables near the kiosk too. Kids will love the Alien Invasion Trail around the park! More experienced walkers can use the park as a base to explore the countryside around Manmoel. Good to know: the park is free and open all year. Swimming isn't allowed because the water is very cold and has hidden hazards. Anglers need a day ticket.
