Rhondda Heritage Park (A Welsh Coal Mining Experience)
Coed Cae Road, Trehafod, Pontypridd, CF37 2NP
About this place
Follow in the footsteps of the miners at Rhondda Heritage Park, home of the Welsh Mining Experience at the old Lewis Merthyr Colliery. The highlight is the Black Gold Experience, an underground guided tour led by a former miner who shares what life was really like below ground. It ends with a ride on a simulated dram back up to the surface! Back above ground, free digital and interactive displays tell the stories of miners, mine owners and their communities, with a mine owner's parlour and a traditional shop to explore. In the courtyard you'll find original mining artefacts, an Anderson bomb shelter and the Old Forge, where a blacksmith once shod the colliery horses. Caffe Bracchi serves snacks, coffee and meals, and there's a Welsh gift shop too. Good to know: the underground tour is paid. Check the website for tour times and booking.
