Skirrid Fawr Trail
B4521, Llanddewi Skirrid, Abergavenny, NP7 8AP
About this place
The Skirrid, also known as the Holy Mountain, is one of the most striking hills around Abergavenny, and this National Trust trail takes you all the way to the top. The route is about 4 miles (6.4km) and takes around two hours. You'll start in woodland before heading out onto the open mountainside for a steep final climb. At the summit, take in the epic views and look out for the remains of St Michael's Chapel, a medieval chapel where people secretly gathered for Mass in the 17th century. Local legend says the hill's unusual shape was caused at the moment of the crucifixion! Good to know: it's a moderate walk with steep climbs and descents on gravel, mud and grass paths, so wear sturdy footwear. It starts from the car park on the B4521. Dogs are welcome but must be kept under close control.
