Tintern Abbey & Surrounding Area
Tintern, Chepstow, NP16 6SE
About this place
Tintern Abbey is one of the most breathtaking sights in Wales. This roofless Gothic ruin sits right on the banks of the River Wye, surrounded by wooded hills, and it has inspired poets and painters for centuries. The abbey was founded by Cistercian monks in 1131. Today you can wander through the great church, with its soaring arches and enormous west window, then explore the cloisters, the Abbot's lodgings and the infirmary. An exhibition tells the story of the monks who lived here, and there's a gift shop with guidebooks and goodies. Bring a picnic and soak up the views, then stretch your legs along the Wye Valley, which is beautiful whatever the season. Good to know: entry is paid, and children under 5 go free. Conservation work means there's scaffolding around the church and some areas are cordoned off, with a discount on admission while repairs continue. The car park is pay and display (card only). Dogs on short leads are welcome on ground-floor levels. Outside of the Abbey, there are some lovely walks alongside the river with some funky shops and pubs and restaurants worth a visit, you could easily spend a day mooching around this beautiful spot.
