Tredegar House & Park
Pencarn Way, Newport, NP10 8YW
About this place
Fancy a proper mooch around one of Wales' grandest red-brick mansions? Tredegar House, cared for by the National Trust, is a 17th-century beauty right on Newport's doorstep, and there's loads to explore inside and out. Step into the grand State Rooms, then head Below Stairs to see how the servants kept the place running. Outside, three very different formal gardens are waiting: the wild and wonderful Orchard Garden, the classic lawns of the Cedar Garden and the intricate patterns of the Orangery Garden. Beyond them stretch around 90 acres of parkland with a lake, woodland and open lawns, and there's even a 20-acre area where dogs can run off the lead. When the legs need a rest, the Brewhouse Café has you covered, and there's a volunteer-run second-hand bookshop and independent shops to browse too. Keep an eye out for seasonal family events throughout the year. Good to know: the house and gardens are paid entry (free for National Trust members), while the parkland is free to wander. Parking is charged for non-members. The play area is closed while a new one is being built.
