Wentwood Forest
Usk Road, Llanfair Discoed, NP16 6LZ
About this place
Wentwood is one of the largest ancient woodlands in Wales, sitting between Newport and Chepstow, and it's a brilliant place to get lost (in a good way!). Looked after by the Woodland Trust, it has a huge network of waymarked paths, tracks and bridleways, with sweeping views over the Severn Estuary. Come in spring for carpets of bluebells, or in autumn when colourful fungi like fly agaric pop up. More than 70 types of bird and 23 types of butterfly live here, so listen out for wood warblers and look out for wood ant nests. Don't miss the ancient Curley Oak, and keep an eye out for Bronze Age burial mounds and old charcoal hearths. Walkers, cyclists, horse riders and orienteers all love it here, and the Usk Valley Walk passes through. Good to know: parking is at the Cadira Beeches and Foresters' Oaks car parks on Usk Road, and there's a picnic site at Foresters' Oaks. There are no public toilets nearby. Dogs are welcome.
